Adjusting the Course – When EU Projects Don’t Go to Plan

In episode #245 of The Grant – the EU funding podcast, I continue the Implementation Series with Antonietta Pizza, Head of EU Projects Unit at ENCO Consulting, to discuss what happens when an EU-funded project starts moving away from the original plan. Antonietta begins with an important distinction between normal project turbulence and a genuine structural problem: delays, unexpected technical results, dependencies between work packages, silent partners or difficulties involving external stakeholders can all require very different responses. We discuss why coordinators need to detect problems early, maintain bilateral contact with partners, keep the project officer informed and lead the consortium rather than simply administer it. From there, we move into the practical consequences: reallocating tasks and resources, formal amendments when necessary, documenting deviations and protecting the overall objectives and impact of the project. And sometimes an unexpected or negative result can itself become valuable knowledge.
